Kandy, Overview Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka, it’s both an administrative and religious city. It’s the capital of Central province which covered with mount range.

The temple of the tooth relic

Sri Dalada Maligawa or The temple of the sacred tooth relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy ,Sri Lanka. It’s located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site mainly due to the temple.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

This one’s considered amongst the best places to visit in Kandy for those who are fascinated by the wildlife! Plan a day out with wild Asian elephants at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. This is a -popular breeding ground of 90 plus elephants who stay in their natural habitat. Watch these adorable elephants bathe, play around, and feed them fruits. Tourists can see them when they take a tour around the orphanage to see the majestic animals. This place is perfect if you want to have a small picnic along with your friends or family.

Kandy Lake

Adjoining most of the popular tourist places in Kandy and eateries with lake view, the Kandy Lake is certainly among the best places to visit in Kandy, Sri Lanka. An ideal place to spend hours during your lazy vacation, the lake offers stunning nature views around it and is a perfect romantic sojourn for a romantic couple visiting the place. The lake, existing since 1807, has a flurry of idyllic places and historical structures around. The lake is also known as the Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk and is an artificial lake. Being in the heart of the city and beside some of the famous attractions of Kandy, it is a popular tourist site. There is also an island in the middle of the lake. Around the lake is built the Wakulla Bamma or the Clouds Wall which increases the beauty of it. Tourists can also see the Ulpan or Queens Bathing Pavilion which is a party in the Kandy Lake.

Knuckles mountain range

This is one of the top places to visit in Kandy Resembling the shape of a knuckle of a clenched fist from the top, the Knuckles Mountain Range is probably one of the most scenic visiting places in Kandy. The mountain Range in the region towards the northern end of Sri Lankan highlands (39 km from Kandy) is the place to be. Perfect place to try your hands-on adventure travelling and camping, the Knuckles Mountain Range spans from Matale to Kandy and is a treat for the nature lovers. Look around and embrace the wilderness brought to you by sprawling grasslands, jagged peaks, torrents of streams, and gushing waterfalls. Enjoy the series of painted canvas around.

Royal Botanical Garden

This place is counted as one of the best Kandy attractions. Spanning over 60 hectares, the Royal Botanical Garden is the largest and one of the best places to visit in Kandy with a- hidden charm to explore. Situated in Peradeniya, the place is quite close to the Mahaweli River. Along with the most striking orchids, you can find more than 4000 species of plants in this Botanical Garden. You should definitely visit the National Herbarium of Sri Lanka which is attached to this Royal Botanical Garden. Tourists may tour the whole 147 acres of the garden to spend their day. The garden isn’t something new as it was created in 1821 when it contained mostly coffee and cinnamon plants. Do check out the Cannonball Tree present in this garden which King George V of the United Kingdom and Queen Mary planted in 1901. The garden is also an ideal place to plan a picnic with family and friends.

Udawattekele Sanctuary

Located at the hilly terrains of the temple of the tooth relic, this sanctuary served as the retreat for the Kandyan kings in the older times. Later, converted into a sanctuary, it is an important bio reserve of Kandy. The sanctuary is spread over 104 hectares and is primarily known for the different species of birds residing in it. Offering as many as 80 species of birds and animals like mammals and insects, it is one of the visiting places in Kandy. Along with the wildlife, you can also visit the three Buddhist forest monasteries present at this place. Another attraction is the three Buddhist cave dwellings. Hanthana Mountain

Hanthana Mountain Range is located south-west of the Kandy city, adjacent to the University of Peradeniya. It consists of seven peaks out of which the highest is “Ura Kanda”. It is a popular location for bird watching, hiking and camping. The mountains have served as the location for movies and music videos. The peaks of the mountain offer amazing views of Kandy City.

Being a sacred town, Kandy has no shortage of temple. The three temples, Embekke, Gadaladniya and Lankathilaka in Kandy, are sites with historical value. Gadaladeniya represents the exquisite stone sculptures that are truly unique to our county Sri Lanka.

Embekka Devalaya

The devalaya is dedicated to God Katharagama (Katharagama deviyo). A local deity called Devatha Bandara is also worshipped at this site. The shrine consists of three sections, the “Sanctum of Garagha”, the “ Digge” or “Dancing Hall” and the “Hevisi Mandapaya” or the “ drummers’ Hall”. The Drummers’ Hall has drawn the attention of visitors to the site, due to the splendid Wood carvings of its ornate pillars and its high pitched roof.

Sigiriya

THE “EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD”

Sigiriya is one of the famous and most attractive places in Sri Lanka. Sigiriya means lion’s rock. Hight of the rock is around 200 meters. According to the history of Sri Lanka, this rock used as a Kingdom in Sri Lanka by King Kashyapa in 5th century.

Golden Temple of Dambulla is a World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka, This site is situated 148 Km east of Colombo, 72Km north of Kandy and 43Km north of Matale.

Hill Country- Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya is known for its temperate, cool climate- the coolest area in Sri Lanka. Its name means “city on the plain (table land) or “city of light”. It is at an altitude of 1868m and is considered to be the most important location for tea production. The city is overlooked by Piduruthalagala. Normally people say Sri Lanka has 7 different climates, Hill country- Nuwara Eliya totally proves it.
